15 Holiday Movies to Watch This Xmas

Christmas is just around the corner and we all know what that means. It’s that time when you look at the weather outside and decide to stay out of the cold. It’s time to curl up in a blanket with some hot cocoa, snacks and binge-watch holiday movies. We, at Libas Now, have shortlisted 15 movies that you can watch with or without your family, whatever you like.

– Home Alone Franchise (1990 – 2012)

A classic Christmas family movie that will leave you in fits. If you are a 90s kid who grew up watching this, we know that this is pure childhood Christmas nostalgia for you guys. It has the right amount of gangster movie sound bites, junk food, booby traps and everything that an 8-year-old Kevin McCallister can think of to plot and scheme his way out of a home burglary. The franchise is a classic that we couldn’t miss.

– The Holiday (2006)

If you are looking for a cute rom-com to watch this Christmas with your hot cocoa, this is the one. It all begins when two women; Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet face romantic setbacks and decide to get away from their normal lives; thus, end up swapping houses over the holidays. A bonus is the swoon-worthy Jude Law (and his super sexy accent, of course) to go gaga over. Go on, get your hot cocoa, right now.

– A Christmas Prince Trilogy (2017 – 2019)

The Netflix trilogy is something that can work for a nice, long binge-watch session with your sister or girlfriends, if you may. A Christmas Prince was one of Netflix’s first original holiday movies, so grab some snacks, curl up in a blanket and you have a rom-com session that awaits you.

– The Grinch (2018)

For anyone who isn’t feeling very Christmas-y this holiday season, this movie is for you. Also, because there is nothing a live-action movie cannot solve. Sing along with the Grinch’s anti-Christmas songs and watch the green, furry creature plot to ruin Whoville’s Christmas celebrations.

– Elf (2003)

Known to be Will Ferrell’s most iconic role as Buddy, Elf was the film that turned him into “a candy-gobbling; box office-conquering phenomenon”. The story follows Buddy, a human who grew up at the North Pole living under the impression that he’s an elf and then travels to the human world to find his birth father. The energetic, goofy performance by Ferrell along with the rest of the team adds to the holiday spirit and you get what is known to be the best Christmas movie of the new millennium to date.

– It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

This Frank Capra film is known to be one of the best movies ever made. Not only that, it is highly recommended that one should watch it in the proper way it was first shown; the black and white cinematography. Following the story of George Bailey’s (Jimmy Stewart) suicidal contemplation on Christmas Eve due to a massive bout of bad luck and how his guardian angel Clarence (Henry Travers) shows him flashbacks of his life and all the times, he’s impacted another’s life for the better. With a heart-warming ending, if this doesn’t make you tear up with joy, we don’t know what will.

– Frozen I – II (2013 & 2019)

We all remember singing to “Let It Go” and “Do You Wanna Build A Snowman,” and with everything snow, we know this is one holiday movie the kids shouldn’t miss. Let’s not forget our most lovable character Olaf along with the badass Queen Elsa and Princess Anna, who tell us that we should all spread love everywhere we go. The sequel has already become everyone’s favourite. It is the third Disney animated film ever to make $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

– A Christmas Carol (1951)

The reason why A Christmas Carol made it to our list is because of the memorable performance by Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge. His performance throughout the movie was commendable. From being a pitiless miser to a heart-breaking performance as a changed man, it has won hearts and you must not miss the movie, this holiday season.

– Little Women (1994)

Let’s not forget Gillian Armstrong’s version of Louisa May Alcott’s timeless novel Little Women. A little less of a Christmas-y movie, but worth a watch during the holidays with a powerhouse line-up of Winona Ryder, Gabriel Byrne, Trini Alvarado, Samantha Mathis, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes, Christian Bale. It can be said that a timeless story can succeed no matter how many times it’s told. A 2019 version directed by Greta Gerwig is set to release on 25th December featuring Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, and Timothée Chalamet. Keep your tissue box ready.

– Love Actually (2003)

Following 10 different love stories that are all subtly linked together, this movie is as cheesy of a Christmas rom-com as it can get. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll fall in love with the characters, but most of all you will enjoy sipping on your hot cocoa and eating the snacks as you watch this movie.

– About A Boy (2002)

Another movie to watch if you aren’t feeling very festive this year. The protagonist in this movie, Will Freeman (Hugh Grant) is a classic Grinch. He is not fond of kids, discards Christmas celebrations and the merry ambience around. This rejection has been carried off ever since his father wrote the joyfully tacky novelty hit “Santa’s Super Sleigh”. However, all that changes when he meets an awkward boy named Marcus. The rest is for you to watch.

– Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)

Want a break from your usual rom-com? This movie is just that; with abrupt plot twists that will leave you in fits to a zombie apocalypse, don’t miss out on this. It follows a group of teens finishing high school and trying to get through Christmas as they find themselves trapped around zombie hordes with an affinity to burst into a song anytime.

– Let It Snow (2019)

Anyone who has read the book “Let It Snow” Three Holiday Romances” by John Green, Lauren Myracle and Maureen Johnson was eagerly waiting for the movie release – ever since it was announced. Netflix released the movie in November, the perfect time for a Christmas movie. Now, it wasn’t the best holiday movie released, but its tolerable, a little cute, we might add. It’s something you’d want to watch if you decided that you wouldn’t leave your couch and are surrounded by snacks.

– Last Christmas (2019)

Christmas movies are all about clichés and plot twists, this is one of them as well. A heart-warming story revolving around Kate (Emilia Clarke) and Tom (Henry Golding) is a must-watch, also because who doesn’t enjoy clichés. The chemistry between the lead pair and their performances deserve a round of applause as well.

– The Knight Before Christmas (2019)

Who doesn’t enjoy a little magic, right? Well, this holiday season’s latest release is just that along with some time-travel. The movie stars Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Whitehouse as the knight-in-shining-armour. Plus, you’d be swooning over Josh’s medieval accent along with the cute love story that follows. A perfect movie for a cosy night in with your girls.

Trying to climb the ladder of success with tiny legs. Oh, and my love for movies and music gets me money.
