Coldplay Features Amjad Sabri In Latest Album

Coldplay in their recent album, ‘Everyday Life’ paid a tribute to late qawwal Amjad Sabri in their song ‘Church’. The album is the eighth consecutive one to make it to the top of the Official Album Charts.

In an interview with Entercom, the band’s lead singer Chris Martin talked about the inspiration behind it and said that “the band have incorporated samples from Sabri’s popular track Jaga Ji Laganay into it”.

‘Church’ recalls the band’s 2008 classic ‘Viva La Vida’ with Chris Martin’s voice weaving in and out of Amjad Sabri’s samples keening at the end.

While introducing the Qawwal, Martin said, “There are two cool other singers on that one. There’s this guy who was a Pakistani singer called Amjad Sabri. He was sadly murdered by people who didn’t like what he stood for. Then there’s a friend of ours called Norah, who is a guy from Jerusalem.”

It’s still not confirmed whether Coldplay got permission from Sabri’s family to use the track.
