Interior trends, like fashion, are constantly evolving, borrowing and adapting signature statements from former decades. Art Deco accents from the 1910s are still prevalent today, while mid-century modern occasionally makes its appearance at furniture stores.
We’ve gathered some of the most notable trends that dominated interiors across the globe this decade. From fleeting fads to design crazes, here’s what’s been on the horizon style-wise.

Edison Light Bulbs
These hipster-happy features paired with exposed brick walls made for the perfect industrial vibe. With the rise in warehouses turned houses in the 2000s, the industrial style became and still remains prevalent. Encapsulating vintage vibes, the Edison light bulb may be appealing visually but its inefficient use of energy and poor lighting is probably reason enough to let it go.
Kitsch
Internationally tacky and ironic, this interior design trend made up a huge part of the decade. Referred to as the blatant denial of art this trend represented a focus on extravagance, anticlassic apotheosis and hype. Peculiar and pretentious, Kitsch (despite not being everyone’s cup of tea) cemented its position amongst interior design trends that constantly circle around.
The Green Movement
With the rise in environmental consciousness, a green movement began in all things design and otherwise. Unethical conducts became frowned upon and designers began to actively minimize the impact of their footprint. Multi-purpose furniture made with more sustainable materials is probably the best thing that came out this decade and is undeniably here to stay.

Emphasizing soft neutrals, layered blankets, candles and soft lighting, Hygge despite being the perfect cold-weather ambiance spread its warmth across the globe making for the perfect post work environment.
Terrazzo
Terrazzo made a comeback in interiors this year in a big way. Made with chips of marble, granite, quartz and even glass, terrazzo is a low-cost solution that was once typical of Italian flooring. This decade saw a more graphical, updated version of terrazzo finishes, that decked not only floors but walls, tables, lampshades to printed wallpapers even.
Indoor Plants
Indoor plants, specially one in pedestal planters have become a homeware staple in recent years. From cacti in terrariums to planters in macramé hangers, no matter what your style, there’s an indoor plant to suit you and your lifestyle.
Millennial Pink
In 2017, pink became the new black and in doing so took over our homes as well. This specific blush shade synonymous with Kylie Jenner’s skincare range was so popular that it could be found in fashion, design to the Starbucks drinks menu. Paired with silver or rose gold accessories the pastel palette is a complementary one that works beautifully in most homes when done right.

Comfortable, stylish and quite possibly the best spot to watch Netflix from, velvet sofas – big in the 70s – had a resurgence this decade. Aided by indoor plants and our love for retro furnishings, the velvet couch has been welcomed with arms wide open and is here to stay for the foreseeable future.
Mirrored Furniture
Named after the beautiful city of Venice where mirrors originated and heavily inspired by the Venetian period of time, mirrored furniture dates back as far as the 18th century believe it or not. This art deco period staple has made its way back into our homes, becoming the forefront of innovative design styles by evoking 1920s glamour into every space it inhabits.
Smart Home Hubs
Gone are the days of telephone landlines and books, smart home hubs have arrived to make life easier. From kitchen timers, to radio stations, weather forecasts and even energy monitoring, a smart home hub is the multipurpose butler we never knew we needed. This fairly new yet increasingly sought-after home accessory comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes to fit perfectly with your design aesthetic.

Working brilliantly with every room, especially darker shades such as teal and navy, this metal works beautifully in moderation.

Unlike medieval times, canopy beds – with or without draperies swathed around the four posters – this decade came in a variety of versions. Ranging from iron, wood, to fiberglass, the canopy bed is the perfect statement piece for any bedroom. By adding height and dimension, the canopy bed can add grandeur to any room while anchoring the space perfectly.
